Author(s): Thomas Mayo, Rosie Smiler

First Nations - Kids | 2024 Reconciliation Day - 30th Sept | 2024 NAIDOC Week 7-14th July | Society and Culture

A non-fiction picture book about Vincent Lingiari and the 200 courageous Indigenous stockmen and their families who walked off the Wave Hill Cattle Station in the Northern Territory in 1966.

Exquisitely illustrated and designed, this title brings a landmark historical event to a new generation.

At the Book Cow, we are excited to be reading another new release this time Freedom Day the story of Vincent Lingiari and the Wave Hill Walk Off. The 55th anniversary of the Walk-Off is in 23 August.

Importantly the book helps set up a class discussion about what needs to happen next as a country and a people. How the Uluru Statement from the Heart and a voice can ensure that First Nation's People are heard and respected. Just like the Gurindji did before.

This is a great way to introduce primary school and junior high school students to an important part of our history and a practical way to discuss the concepts of human rights, voice in decision making and the importance of social movements. That it does not focus only on the iconic photo but the events leading up to and after provides is really important. It provides a lot more context for the discussion.

A great addition for to our collection of history books for kids.
